Power Distribution Unit

A power distribution or data center requires an uninterrupted power supply. To attain this, a power distribution unit (PDU) is necessary. Large power strip PDUs that do not involve surge protection are the most common. They are installed to provide normal electricity distribution for the equipment in a data center and operate traditionally without remote or monitoring access.

BASS has a team of specialistswith vast knowledge of the most reliable Elmdene fire and security products, such as passive standby systems, line interactive systems, and double conversion systems.

Passive-standby systems

They are the least expensive while offering the most minor level of protection amongst the three systems listed above. They are used to monitor the power input, and once there is no power from the main switch to the battery source. The interchange occurs very quickly, within milliseconds. The system is used in some computer applications but is preferred for something other than highly-sensitive electronics due to power loss during the changeover process. Another disadvantage is the lack of ability to filter out noise within the power lines. This disadvantage limits their use of computer desktop applications.

Line-interactive systems

This is another type of UPS system where an inductor is connected between the powered equipment and the power source, and a well-designed battery bank acts as a filter for the incoming electric power. This UPS is accompanied by better protection than passive-standby systems, although it does not offer complete protection to the equipment against instabilities in the input power. This system provides satisfying protection for less critical equipment, but an improved method is needed for critical ones, for example, data centers.

Double-conversion systems

These are the best systems for eliminating the power loss disadvantage associated with the first two UPS during the transfer of the input power to battery banks connected to the system’s direct-current part. They benefit fromfully isolating the protected equipment from the input primary power source, thus protecting them against any power disturbance. They offer better run times for your power needs depending on the backup batteries, types of generators, and equipment connected.
